kitsune: I said I almost forgot to pay my rent!

keitaro: ...Is that true?

kitsune: Believe me.

keitaro: Suuuure.

narusegawa: Mou... I'm almost late for the make-up exam! Gotta' get going.

mutsumi: Naru! You're in such a hurry. Where's the fire?

narusegawa: Toudai! I have a makeup exam today.

mutsumi: A make up exam? You didn't pass the finals?

narusegawa: Yeah, sorta. Anyway, Itterashai.

mutsumi: Ittekimasu. By the way, have you seen Keitaro?

narusegawa: He's out with Shinobu! They're on a field trip.

mutsumi: Wow. A field trip. Sounds exciting and romantic, doesn't it?

narusegawa: *trips* No, it doesn't!

mutsumi: Suit yourself, but if you ask me. It's a perfect chance to tell what your heart desire whilst enjoying the view and the souvenirs and the food and the you know...

narusegawa: Waah! I'm going to fail the exam again!

shinobu: Okaeri nasi, Keitaro-senpai.

keitaro: Tadaima.

shinobu: How about lunch, senpai?

keitaro: No thanks, I'm stuffed. I ate lunch in Toudai. Say, about your class field trip...

shinobu: Soueba, have you decided to be my chaperone?

keitaro: Yup. So don't worry.

shinobu: Yokatta! Keitaro-senpai's going to be chaperone for my class field trip! I'm so glad!

*phone rings*

kitsune: Moshi-moshi? Yes, she's here. Chotto matte kudasai. Shinobu-chan! It's for you.

shinobu: Hai! Hello? Speaking. Yes. The field trip? Hah?? I see. Wiith the same price? U-huh... Okay. Bye.

keitaro: Let me guess. The class field trip's postponed?

shinobu: Uhh... quite the opposite. This time, it's an overnight class field trip.

keitaro: *pauses* Oookay.

shinobu: Uhhm... Keitaro-senpai. Since it's an overnight class field trip, I'm sure you have an important work to attend to during those days. I totally understand if you're not coming along. You're in college after all and...

keitaro: Daijobou, daijobou. It's totally fine with me. Don't worry.

shinobu: Okay. If you say so.

keitaro: [Why do I feel weird right now?]

keitaro: Okaeri, Narusegawa. 'Back from campus?

Narusegawa: *faced Keitaro* Yeah, they've just posted the results from the final exams.

keitaro: How did you do? Wait *slaps forehead*... Silly me. Of course, you did great. You probably aced the exams right?

narusegawa: Ahaha... good one.

keitaro: By any chance, you haven't seen my class standing yet, right? *nervous laugh*?

narusegawa: Sorry, I haven't seen your grades. After all, there are only a few of them posted. I'm lucky they posted my grade very early. Maybe you'll see yours tomorrow.

keitaro: I'll do just that.

kitsune: Okaeri nasai. You two sure are late today. Where have you been? Oh, I get it...

narusegawa: Don't get any ideas, Mitsune Konno.

kitsune: What?! You mean?! You really?! You did?! You two?! How could...?!

narusegawa: Wai- wai- wait. What? Eww! Gross! Heck no. We're late because of our finals. It is the "finals week" in Toudai, so you should expect us to be late until the end of the week.

kitsune: Hmm... Interesting. Anyway, enough about your silly secret -- how is it then?

narusegawa: There's no secret, damn it! And an answer to your question, the exam was a so-so. It's not really that hard or that easy. But, I guess mine's okay. Unlike someone I know...

keitaro: Daijobou daijobou. The exam was alright. I squeezed every fold of my brain just to answer some of the items, but that Geol. exam was hell of a test. In the end, I guess I did okay too. Anyway, I'll head upstairs. I need to study for my next exam. Tell Shinobu-chan that I'm sorry if I miss dinner.

narusegawa: Skip dinner? C'mon how long are you going to study in your creep?

keitaro: I bought bento. So don't worry, I'll eat inside my room.

*silence*

narusegawa: Are you... I don't know. We're starting to feel that you're avoiding us, Keitaro.

keitaro: Don't be silly.

Keitaro Urashima is a 20 year-old student who at the start of Love Hina is trying to get into Tokyo University.

After failing the entrance exams twice and becoming a second-year ronin, he is kicked out of home by his cheap parents. With no money and nowhere to stay, he decides to go to his grandmother's hotel, thinking he might be able to stay there. However, he finds out the hard way that his grandmother has turned the hotel into an all-girls dormitory. If I were Keitaro by that time, I would be dead on my tracks.

Through a combination of bad luck and timing, he encounters Naru Narusegawa in the open-air hot springs bath and infuriates her. He then proceeds to land on the bad side of the other dorm residents, before Haruka arrives and metaphorically bails him out. Ultimately he does end up staying at the Hinata "All Girls Dormitory", though the reason and timing varies slightly between the anime and the manga. In the manga, Keitaro is granted the deed to the Hinata House itself by his grandmother; as he now owns the establishment, he becomes landlord by default. In the anime, he is granted only the landlord's title and duties.

Despite looking like a weakling, he can actually take quite a bit of punishment and still get up from it, granted the nickname of "invincible body" which is just as well as he is always getting into situations where one of more of the girls get angry at him and hitting him. Usually this involves one of them being naked and him being responsible as the witness.

Through the course of the story Keitaro starts doing quite well in his studies, passes the entrance exams for Tokyo University after another failure and develops friendships with all the girls in the house, but in particular with Naru and (later on) Mutsumi.

Keitaro takes promises seriously, and it seems that he made a number of important ones during his childhood. First and foremost was his promise of 15 years ago (age 5) with a little girl he barely remembers that they would get into Tokyo University together one day. After taking up residence in the Hinata House, he quickly comes to suspect that Narusegawa Naru may have been the girl of his promises. He later experiences some doubts about this conclusion when he begins to learn more of Mutsumi Otohime's past and her connections with the Hinata House during their childhood, but later on the exact connection becomes clear and he finds out Naru was the one he made the promise to after all.

Episode 20 of the TV anime series revealed the second promise Keitaro made, though the story is not told in the manga. His great-grandfather promised a doll he would fix her broken legs, in jest. After some time the doll, now called Moe, was possessed by a spirit and became selectively sentient.

Finally, late in the manga and in the Love Hina Again OAV series, it is revealed that Keitaro made a promise with his adopted sister Kanako that they would one day run the Hinata Inn together.

His surname Urashima is apparently derived from an old tale Urashimataro.

The hapless, somewhat bruised-and-battered main character of the story. Because of a promise he recalls making to a childhood sweetheart 15 years ago, Keitaro's been trying to get into Tokyo University (for the record, Tokyo University is the premier college in the country. It's very tough to get in, and you can only try once a year). But bad study habits and low self-esteem have contributed to two failed attempts.

He jumps on the opportunity to get away from home and come back to the home of his youth: the Hinata Apartments. Thing was, he didn't realize that the place had turned into a girl's dormitory, and it takes a while for things to settle down, though they never completely settle down even as he moves into Room 204 (directly below Naru, who's in 304). Though Keitaro does sometimes have those male kinds of fantasies (he's surrounded by pretty girls, and there's a hole to Naru's room in the ceiling), his frequent episodes of pervertedness are typically accidental: usually the result of clumsiness or just bad timing.

Overall, Keitaro's just trying to get things straight in his life. He's nice enough if you can just forgive his (usually accidental) slights, though he still has to get over his down-in-the-dumps attitude. He also has quite a talent for art.
